What are trekking bikes?

The trekking bike They are versatile bicycles designed to tackle both urban routes and excursions on mixed terrain, such as dirt roads, gravel cycle paths, dirt roads and asphalted stretches. They are ideal for those looking for a comfortable and resistant means of transport for long journeys, the cycle tourism or the day trips, even with luggage in tow.

The chassis of trekking bikes is generally made of aluminum, to offer a good compromise between lightness and resistance, and features a comfortable geometry that allows you to maintain a upright driving position, suitable for long-distance pedaling without straining your back and shoulders. Many models include Mountings for luggage racks and side bags, making them ideal for multi-day trips.

On average, one trekking bike weighs between the 14 to 17 kg, depending on the frame materials, the accessories mounted (luggage rack, mudguards, lights, stand) and the possible presence of a suspension fork

What is the difference between a trekking bike and a gravel bike?

The trekking bike is designed for mixed use, but with an eye to comfort on long journeys and mixed routes: asphalt, cycle paths, dirt roads, light dirt roads. It has a more relaxed riding position, ideal for cycle touring or for those travelling with bags and loads. The gravel bike, instead, are born to face more technical and challenging terrains, such as gravel, dirt country paths, forest roads and long mixed stretches. The frame has a sportier and more reactive geometry, similar to that of a racing bike but with greater stability.

Are trekking bikes good for the mountains?

Trekking bikes are designed for mixed terrain, such as paved roads, light dirt roads and extra-urban cycle paths. However, they are not the most suitable choice for tackling technical and challenging mountain routes, where the most suitable bike is undoubtedly the mountain biking. In particular, the following are recommended: MTB Hardtail (with front suspension) for non-extreme mountain trails; and the Full suspended MTB (with double suspension) for more technical and downhill routes, where control and shock absorption become fundamental.

How much does a trekking bike cost?

The price of a trekking bike can vary based on several factors, including the brand, frame materials, drivetrain type, suspension, and built-in accessories such as racks, fenders, and lights. On average, a good trekking bike for recreational or touring use costs between 400 to 900 euros.

Entry-level models, with aluminum frames, mechanical shifting, and basic components, start at around 400–500 euros. More advanced versions, designed for long-distance touring or intensive use, with quality suspension forks, hydraulic disc brakes, and more performing geometries, can exceed 900 euros.

For those interested in purchasing a bike, the bike bonus, or mobility bonus, a state incentive that allows you to obtain a partial reimbursement on the purchase of traditional, electric and cargo bikes.
